Putting Money Back on Canadian
Soil
As the organization grows, so has the Wild Elk Federation's
ability to enhance habitat, acquire and protect critical wildlife range,
fund wildlife research and support wildlife conservation education programs.
With its solid reputation of putting money back
on Canadian ground, Wild Elk Federation has gained the respect of government
agencies, corporations and the general public. We owe a great deal of
gratitude to our ardent corps of partners, whose tireless efforts have
laid the groundwork for ensuring the future for elk habitat in North
America.
Land acquisitions and conservation easements ensure
long term protection of critical habitat. Potential conservation lands
are identified in discussion with wildlife management agencies for their
significance as critical winter range, calving grounds, important migration
corridors or related values as wildlife habitat for a variety of species.
Proposed acquisitions are then reviewed and if appropriate approved
by the Wild Elk Foundation's volunteer board of directors.
The Wild Elk Federation fosters cooperation and
dialogue through private/public partnerships with resource users and
management agencies. We work closely with private timber companies to
improve wildlife values on their forest lands. We also partner with
the coal industry in an effort to protect lands reclaimed for wildlife
and the wildlife that's flourished on these mine sites. The Elk Federation
has met on numerous occasions with government wildlife and forest managers.
The results of these working relationships has provided land and wildlife
managers with new reasons for optimism amidst the sometimes stormy resource
battles that surround them.
A number of the Wild Elk Federation's habitat enhancement
projects will involve prescribed burns or mechanical clearing which
rejuvenate decadent vegetation and thus greatly boost forage values
for wildlife.
