"Call of the Wild"
2010
Canadian Elk Calling Championships
Donny
Zenner of Alberta, cow called and bugled his way to the WEF title of
Canadian Elk Calling Champion for 2010. Donny received a cheque for
$1,500.00 and the 2010 CECC trophy for his efforts.
The inaugural year of the Canadian Elk Calling Championships competition
has now been completed. Presented by the Wild Elk Federation and supported
by the premier sponsor, Canadian National Sportsman's Shows, the competition
has been deemed a huge success. Over $8,000.00 in cash and prizes were
distributed throughout the competition.
Preliminary
qualifying rounds were completed in Calgary, Medicine Hat, Red Deer,
Saskatoon and Edmonton prior to the finals held at the Edmonton Boat
and Sportsman's Show on March 21st. The top three qualifiers from each
venue moved on to the finals. All three western provinces were represented
in the competition with competitors ranging in age from 6 to 60.
Large crowds were wooed by the likes of six year old Jarrett Nicholson
from Medicine Hat who went on to his radio debut with interviews and
calling on CBC Wildrose in Alberta and then went national across Canada
on CBC the following week.
Six year old Sidney Rodgers from Alberta, the competitions first female
competitor, received a huge ovation from the crowds of onlookers at
the Edmonton preliminary round.
Slated to be an annual event, the 2011 competition is expected to be
bigger and better with cash and prizes exceeding $10,000.00. So elk
callers, start practicing, the level competition is only going to get
better.
